Amazing Truths

And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

Can The Dead Speak To Us?

From time to time or once in a while, we hear stories of how a deceased loved one appeared or appears to some people with a message for them. We’ve also heard of individuals who claim to have the ability to communicate with or consult the dead on behalf of clients.

Many, including some Christians believe its possible for dead friend or relative to communicate with them should need arise. What does the Bible say concerning the state of a dead person and his/her ability to do things? Ecclesiastes 9:5,6 says “For the living know that they will die; but the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, for the memory of them is forgotten. Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished. Nevermore will they have a share in anything done under the sun.”

The text quoted above clearly states that, a dead person is totally unconcious. Knowing this very well, the Psalmist in his prayer once said “For in death there is no remembrance of You; In the grave who will give you thanks?” So, if a dead person is totally unconcious, then who or what appears to those who say they have seen the dead return to speak to them? When the rebelious Lucifer (who later was named Satan) was cast out of heaven, he got thrown out together with his angels (the angels who joined him in his rebelion who are now called demons) see Revelation 12:6. Satan and his angels have the ability to impersonate the dead. They will come with messages with the intention to deceive.

So, can the dead speak to us? The answer is “no.”

Also, by implication, if a dead person is totally unconcious, then there is no second chance for salvation. Once you die, your destiny is set. The time to decide to believe in and follow Jesus Christ is now. Tommorrow is not guaranteed – not even the next ten minutes. Jesus died for us on the cross to give an opportunity to have eternal life. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life” John 3:16. Let’s turn to Christ today.

All Bible quotations in this article are from the New King James version (NKJV).
