Key to working less hard

Strange title. “Just what is this fellow promoting?” One may ask. Most of us have come accross the phrase, ‘work smart.’ Well the Bible has a way of saying the same thing. Ecclesiastes 10:10 says, “If the axe is dull [blunt] and one does not sharpen the edge, then he must use more strength; But wisdom brings success. There it is! But I wont end just now.

Hardwork is honourable but sometimes we work harder than we should, wearing ourselves out. A days work sometimes gets negativly affected by the previous day’s breaking of backs. Now, imagine this. A man is given a task to cut down five trees on building site. He must do this in three days and must not go beyond the deadline. He’s given an axe and a tool for sharpening it. The axe`is not sharp enough… ok, lets just bluntly say its blunt. He notices the bluntness of the axe but for some reason, he descides, without sharpening the axe, to begin working on the first tree. He manages to bring the first tree down very late in the afternoon and it dawns on his mind that working at such a rate would cause him to go beyond the three days. So, to beat the deadline, he decides to work late everyday and barely makes it. Now, the onlookers, who don’t know the options available to this man, will praise him for his hardwork. Some will probably even wish they had an employee like him! He too might boast about how commited he is to duty, when in actual sense, the man was plainly inneficient, spending more time and energy than he should.

Do you find yourself working very hard all the time, getting stressed up almost all the time? Ok lets face it, sometimes its unavoidable but have you considered all the available options, have you planned your work before you begin? Ecclesiastes 10:10 ends with the words, “wisdom brings success.” Wisdom is a principal thing. Wisdom will minimise sorrows, wisdon improves quality of life. Even when it comes to the issue of salvation, wisdom is required. In a letter to Timothy, Paul said, “and that from childhood you have known the scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2Tim 3:15). Wisdom is so important that James 1:5 says, “if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all librally without reproach and it will be given to him.”

Wisdom is available. Lets get it and apply in all that we do. God bless you as you apply the wisdom He offers.
